About V-Day DC
V-Day DC is participating in the V-Day campaign (http://www.vday.org)
From V-Day: V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery.
Our local beneficiary is Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive – HIPS (http://www.hips.org).
HIPS mission is to assist female, male, and transgender individuals engaging in sex work in Washington, DC in leading healthy lives. Using a harm reduction model, HIPS’ programs strive to address the impact that HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, discrimination, poverty, violence and drug use have on the lives of individuals engaging in sex work.
Mobile Outreach and Education
HIPS provides safer sex materials, syringe access, counseling, and support to street-based workers Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 11pm to 5 am.
We train former or current sex workers to educate their peers on safety and HIV. Our Peer Educators extend HIPS programs into areas traditional health programs can’t reach.
HIPS provides basic services, such as helping to obtain an ID card or finding emergency shelter.
HIPS trains medical and social service providers to appropriately address the needs of sex workers and address barriers sex workers face in accessing services.
V-Day DC is an all-volunteer community production. We are affiliated with the Truman Scholars Association. (http://www.trumanscholars.org)
From the Truman Scholars Association: The Truman Scholars Association (TSA) exists to support, connect and promote Truman Scholars in every way. The Truman network consists of some of the finest public service leaders from over thirty years of Scholar classes. The TSA strives to open the lines of communication between those individuals to benefit Scholars, society and the legacy of President Harry S. Truman. The mission of the Truman Scholars Association is to build, maintain, and educate a community of Truman Scholars; to foster a life long commitment to public service in all its forms through intellectual, personal, and professional development; and to support and promote public service.
